Bastion

Contents

Bastion is a fortified Dustwalker[1] city nestled within the formidable cliffs of the Noctis Labyrinthus region on Mars. Established in 2265, it boasts a unique and secretive character, fostering a population of approximately 350 permanent residents and a fluctuating number of guest researchers, currently at 412 (as of 2525). Bastion serves as a vital center for Dustwalker security and a repository of potentially groundbreaking technology.

History

The origins of Bastion are shrouded in some mystery. Early Martian colonists, facing the harsh realities of the Red Planet, sought refuge within the labyrinthine caverns of the Noctis Labyrinthus. Led by the enigmatic Commander Darius, a group of these colonists established Bastion, prioritizing security and self-reliance above all else.

Bastion's construction is a marvel of early Martian engineering. Massive blast doors seal the only known entrance, a narrow tunnel carved deep into the cliff face. The city itself is a network of interconnected caverns, some natural, others expertly expanded and reinforced. Throughout the centuries, Bastion has remained largely self-sufficient, fostering a culture of secrecy and suspicion towards outsiders.

Focus and Activities

Bastion's primary focus revolves around defence and security. The city maintains a well-trained and well-equipped militia, constantly vigilant against potential threats, both internal and external. Rumours abound of advanced weaponry and technology safeguarded within Bastion's depths, some believed to be salvaged from ancient Martian ruins. The city fiercely guards these secrets, conducting their own research and development deep within the caverns.

Life in Bastion

Life within Bastion is regimented and disciplined. Residents prioritize security and self-reliance, with a strong emphasis on community and shared responsibility. Outsiders are rarely seen within the city, and those granted access are subject to strict scrutiny. For Bastioners, the harsh Martian environment is just one challenge they face; the true dangers, they believe, lie beyond their walls.

Tourism and Business

Bastion is not a tourist destination. Its secretive nature and focus on security discourage casual visitors. However, a limited number of researchers and scholars, seeking collaboration or access to rumoured Bastion technology, may be granted temporary access through a rigorous vetting process. Business opportunities within Bastion are virtually non-existent.

Challenges

Bastion's isolation and secrecy present significant challenges. Limited resources and a closed society can hamper technological and social progress. Additionally, the city's focus on internal security may foster a sense of paranoia and distrust.

Legacy

Bastion remains an enigma on the Martian landscape. Its dedication to security and its potential possession of advanced technology make it a subject of fascination and speculation. While its secretive nature may be a source of frustration for some, Bastion undeniably plays a vital role in safeguarding the Dustwalker Territory.
