Terrahound
The Terrahound is a medium-sized dog breed[1] that originated in Arctica: Earth’s Polar Frontier[2]. Known for its thick, white coat, the Terrahound is well-adapted to the cold, harsh conditions of Earth's polar regions. Bred for resilience and strength, the Terrahound is both a working dog and a loyal companion, trusted by explorers and settlers in the icy wilderness of Arctica.
History
The Terrahound was developed during the mid-2400s, as human activity in Earth's polar regions increased and the need for a hardy working breed became apparent. With the establishment of Arctica: Earth’s Polar Frontier, a settlement dedicated to research and exploration, the Terrahound was selectively bred from existing Arctic dog breeds to adapt specifically to the extreme conditions of the polar frontier. Similar to the way the Titan Shepherd[3] was developed for the icy terrain of Titan, the Terrahound was bred for strength, endurance, and the ability to withstand freezing temperatures. It quickly became an essential companion for explorers and settlers living in Arctica.
Appearance
The Terrahound is a medium-sized dog, typically weighing between 25-35 kg. Its most distinctive feature is its thick, dense white coat, which provides insulation against the cold and blends in with the snow-covered landscape. The coat is water-resistant, ensuring that the dog remains dry even in snowy and icy conditions. The Terrahound has a muscular build, with strong legs that allow it to traverse rugged and icy terrain. Its eyes are typically dark, providing a striking contrast against its white fur, and its bushy tail helps it maintain balance in challenging environments.
Behaviour
The Terrahound is known for its loyal, hardworking, and intelligent nature. It is a highly trainable breed, making it ideal for various tasks such as pulling sleds, guarding camps, and helping explorers navigate the frozen wilderness. Similar to the Titan Shepherd, the Terrahound is fearless and resilient, well-suited for the challenging conditions it faces daily.
Despite its working capabilities, the Terrahound is also an affectionate breed, forming strong bonds with its human companions. It is protective of its family and can act as an effective guard dog[4], alerting settlers to any potential threats in the remote areas of Arctica. The breed is social and interacts well with other dogs, making it a good choice for multi-dog households, especially in communal living situations.
Health
The Terrahound is generally a healthy breed, bred for resilience in extreme conditions. Its thick coat requires regular grooming to prevent matting and to maintain its insulating properties. Like other working breeds, joint health is a primary concern, particularly as the dog ages and continues to perform physically demanding tasks. A diet rich in protein and fats is essential to meet the breed’s high energy requirements and to maintain its overall health.
In the cold environment of Arctica, the Terrahound is at risk of developing frostbite if not properly cared for, although its thick coat offers significant protection. Similar to the health challenges faced by breeds like the Titan Shepherd and the Europa Sprinter, maintaining muscle mass and joint flexibility is crucial for the Terrahound, given the physical demands of its environment.
